Chris Huber is bringing his expertise to Carson City.

“It’s what I know,” he said. “It’s what I do.”

What Huber knows is the world of cycling.

Huber is a former professional cyclist who had several top-10 finishes in the World Cycling Championships and held the speed record for a self-powered vehicle in 1993.

Now, he is translating that success into a business.

Huber opened his bicycle shop, Bike Carson-Tahoe, in August of last year. At first, he said, he was receiving a lot of repair requests from customers in the Hot Springs neighborhood. But after nearly a year in business, he said, his clientele has started to expand.

“I’ve stuck my toe in and I’ve started to get dialed in,” he said. “I’m figuring out what the market is here.”

It wasn’t quite what he expected.

“There’s more of a high-end market than what I thought,” he said. “There are more people who ride mid- and high-end bikes here. Both road and mountain bikes.”

Growing up in the Bay area, Huber said, he was always on a bicycle. He rode his first century ride at the age of 12 or 13. While he took a break during high school, he picked it back up after graduation, getting into racing.

“The first couple of years racing, you’re working a bike shop part time,” he said. “For me, I went pro pretty quickly.”

He spent 16 years as a professional cyclist, riding six years for the top-tier Coors Light team. He retired from the sport in 1995.

During his career, he said, he never experimented with performance-enhancing drugs but knew they were there.

“When I was racing, blood doping was rampant,” he explained. “I just made the decision not to do it.”

He said he set the goal to finish within the top 8 of his 2.5-mile Individual Pursuit, and let that be his motivation.

“I was satisfied with my results,” he said. “Maybe I never got as famous or as rich as I could have, but I raced clean.”

After living 10 years in Hawaii, Huber moved to Carson City to be with his girlfriend, Janice Brod, whom he met at the X-terra World Championships in Maui.

While he laments the cold winters here, he appreciates the open space for both mountain and road biking.

“This is a great area for bikes. On a mountain bike you can get out in nature, up in the trees and the scenery is beautiful,” he said. “Even on a road bike, you’ve got some great scenery and no traffic really to speak of.”

He carries bikes that run from a $500 commuter around town to a $5,000 road or mountain bike. He carries Cannondale, Pivot, Ibis, Breezer and Surly mainly.

By Christmas, he said, Cannondale will be releasing its line of children’s bikes.

He also leads weekly rides from his shop and offers two annual bike tours in Hawaii.

His experience with building his own bikes means he can fix just about anything, even a broken frame.

“I can do things most people can’t,” he said.

Despite his own expertise, he said, he’s happy to help those with less experience.

“That’s what I enjoy,” he said. “Helping people find the right bike. Getting them out there having a good time on their bikes.”

Bike Shop Hosts Free Triathlon Clinic

By Teri Vance, originally appearing on the Nevada Appeal

Pregnant with her fifth child in 2002, Janice Brod was hesitant to train for her first triathlon. Knowing the level of athleticism of her competitors, she wondered if she should even enter.

But she did, and fell in love with the three-sport competition. By 2006, she had become the Xterra World age group champion at the age of 35.

Janice Brod, right, and Chris Huber will be instructing a free triathlon clinic for women on Saturday. Jim Grant / Nevada Appeal

“It’s something I’ve accomplished and I’m proud of,” she said. “But I’m not intimidating at all.”

Rather, she hopes to share her knowledge with budding triathletes at a free workshop Saturday at the newly opened Bike Carson Tahoe.

Along with shop owner Chris Huber, former professional cyclist and U.S. National champion, she will share tips on transition set up, nutrition, clothing, strategy, bike handling and any other topics that come up.

“I’ve learned a lot through all of my races,” she said. “I have some good pointers people can benefit from. I totally would have gone to something like this if it had been available.”

The clinic will be focused on the upcoming Iron Girl Triathlon in Lake Tahoe on Sept. 18. However, Brod said, all interested triathletes are welcome.

After the clinic, Brod and Huber will lead a 15-mile road ride around Franktown Road.

That’s something Huber would like to see more of in the future.

“I’ll be organizing some continuing training programs and leading some rides out of here,” he said. “It’s a good way to reach out to people to keep everyone enthused and to stay enthused yourself.”

The shop, which specializes in high-end road and mountain bikes, will also be offering bike rentals, tune-ups and fittings.

To schedule a bike fit in advance of the clinic, call Huber at (808) 936-3762. Cost is $40 for a basic fit and takes about an hour.

Brod encouraged first-time triathletes along with more seasoned competitors to attend the clinic. But beyond technique and strategy, she said, the real motivation should be the joy that comes with accomplishment.

“It’s very rewarding to have achieved something like that,” she said. “And it’s just fun. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t have fun.”

Inside Bike Carson-Tahoe

Last week I got a chance to tour the newly opened Bike Carson-Tahoe bike shop.  Owner Chris Huber gave me a full tour, and showed me all the bikes he had out on the floor.  While there is still work to be done to finish up the shop, it’s really looking good in there, and there’s a wide range of bikes to suit most riders.

Bike Carson-Tahoe, Sales, Rentals, and Service

Right now the primary brand in the shop is Cannondale, a company founded in 1971. Cannondale has always been about innovation and trying new things. Not everything they have experimented with over the decades has turned out to be fabulous, but many of their innovations have definitely driven and shaped the bicycle industry. I remember when I started seeing the big fat aluminum tubed Cannondale frames on the trail back in the late 80s. Most of us were riding steel bikes, and these new frames made the bikes look and sound so cool. Today it’s hard to find a steel framed road or mountain bike in a bike shop. Cannondale continues their spirit of innovation today. The Cannondales Chris has in the shop are most impressive, both to look at and to ride!

Chris Huber, Owner, with Flash 29er

Chris let me ride a carbon framed Flash 29er with a Lefty fork. The Lefty fork is strange to look at, but you don’t think about it while you’re riding. This bike is basically the same size and shape as my steel framed Surly, but the carbon frame gave it a totally different feel. It made me really want to get it up on the trails to see how it climbed.

Jekyll

The Jekyll is another bike that got me drooling. This bike is part of Cannondale’s “Overmountain” lineup. This is a bike that rides like an XC bike to the top of the mountain, and descends like a long-travel bike back down. A flick of the handlebar control totally changes the personality of the rear suspension system.

EVO

Also in the shop is the full carbon Cannondale EVO road bike. At just 13-14 lbs complete, it is unbelievable to pick up. I picked it up and put it down about 5 times. My brain just couldn’t believe what it was feeling. I can’t imagine what it’d feel like out on the road!

SL3 29er Single Speed

If you’re going to ride a rigid single speed, a 29er is the way to go. Chris has an SL3 in stock right now for the rider looking for a fun simple mountain bike that requires little maintenance. Spend more time riding, and less time fiddling with the bike.

While there are many high-end bikes in the shop, Chris also has bikes at a more affordable price for people looking to get into the sport. For cyclists looking for something other than Cannondale, other brands to be featured in the shop will be Ibis, Argon 18, and Leopard.

Also unique to Carson City, Bike Carson-Tahoe offers bicycle rentals. While I was there, a runner came in to inquire about renting a nice road bike for her upcoming triathlon. She said she wasn’t really into bikes, but wanted something more competitive for her race than what she currently had. In addition to helping out the locals, bike rentals will help tourism in Carson City. Our city definitely has what it takes to become a bicycle travel destination, and having bike rentals available is definitely part of the equation.

Ibis

Bike Carson-Tahoe is also a full service tune and repair shop as well. Chris has worked in many pro shops, has raced mountain and road bikes at a professional level, built frames, and even once set a world speed record in a human powered vehicle at 68.73 mph! With many years of training people, fitting people to bikes, working on bikes, and designing and building frames, Chris has a wealth of knowledge and experience to offer the customer.

Accessories

Chris has plenty of accessories in the shop now too. Tires, tubes, pumps, bar tape, lube, water bottles, sports supplements, and more. Everything you need to keep you and your bike going.
